TATCHA Silk Canvas Primer

Once a pro tip from backstage, makeup primers have become a beauty category all on their own. With that said, as someone whose makeup application extends to a tinted moisturizer and undereye concealer (ok, *sometimes* a little bronzer), I’ve always found this step optional, maybe even unnecessary. Leave it to TATCHA and the recently launched Silk Canvas to combine luxury and innovation in a formula with skincare benefits that have me reaching for it more often than I predicted.

Why is it different?

Solid in texture, Silk Canvas is a balm to cream formula with a soft matte finish. Infused with actual silk fibers and powder as well as TATCHA’s proprietary blend of Green Tea, Algae, and Rice Ferment Extracts, this last step in your skincare routine blurs fine lines, refines the look of pores, and evens out tone, which delivers an overall brighter appearance. Don’t be wary of the slightly pink hue of this primer as it melts into the skin without a hint of tint. Think smooth, filter like results that make makeup…. optional, really.

How to:

As the final step in your skincare routine, primer preps the skin for makeup to ensure longevity and pigment integrity. Our skin produces natural oils throughout the day, which may alter the shade of your foundation oftentimes giving it an orange appearance (also known as oxidizing). Priming the skin with a silicone base prevents this.

*literally* all you need

Use the application disc included in the package to scrape gently across the Silk Canvas surface until the product reaches the indicator line. Believe it or not, that is all you’ll need to cover your entire face. Dot it across the areas that need a little extra help such as T-zone, crow’s feet, or areas of redness, but keep in mind with any solid formula, less is more. Proceed with makeup.

My thoughts…

Perhaps influenced by our recent visit to Japan, I have a newfound appreciation for the brand’s aesthetic and ritual approach to self-care. The fact is I have no need for a spackle like application of a primer. My complexion, however, benefits greatly from the optical soft focus effect Silk Canvas delivers. If you use a tinted moisturizer, try it two ways: underneath for a longer lasting color payoff or on top to mattify and blur.

so. many. favorites.

With each detail serving a singular purpose, Silk Canvas arrives in an intricate compact and features a subtle floral aroma to complete the multi-sensory TATCHA experience. Is the newness my holy grail? No, but warmer weather is (hopefully!) on the horizon and my T-zone will need all the trickery to make it through the day, so I anticipate reaching for it often.

P.S. The compact is massive. Since you only need a tiny amount per application, it will last months.
