Because the wrong one will flake, fade, or fight your concealer.

Eye gels and I have never had much of a rapport. Too many dry to a tacky film. Some flake within minutes of supposed absorption. Others offer so little slip, applying concealer over them feels like a bad idea in progress. And while they can deliver a pleasant cooling effect, most leave the delicate skin around my eyes asking for something more substantial.
But Madrid has changed the terms. A dry climate demands a different playbook, and I’ve found myself turning back to formulas richer in water content—and surprisingly, enjoying them. My current rotation is pared down to three clear-gel textures that actually deliver, each with a distinct purpose and price point: Votary, Belif, and Tocobo.

Votary Super Bright Eye Gel
Votary’s only eye care formula, this lightweight yet slightly grippy gel is designed to work across all skin types and ages. It contains soothing, hydrating, and brightening botanicals including peptides, hyaluronic acid, coffee seed, green tea, pomegranate, and cucumber extracts to wake up a tired under-eye area. The texture is spot-on: fluid enough to absorb quickly, substantial enough to smooth fine lines, and radiant enough to fake a full night’s sleep after not getting one. I also noticed that my favorite eye pencil corrector sets perfectly over it. Looks like a literal gem sinkside.

Belif Aqua Bomb Eye Gel
If you like a wand applicator, this is one of the better ones. Belif’s Aqua Bomb line is known for delivering hours of skin-plumping hydration, and the Eye Gel takes that same approach to the under-eye area. It targets puffiness and dull, sallow skin—the kind that reads as either exhaustion or post-party dehydration. The ceramic tip stays cool on contact, while the gel infuses caffeine, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and collagen to smooth and refresh. It’s a great carry-on companion, particularly for anyone whose in-flight beverage choices lean more festive than hydrating.

Tocobo Collagen Brightening Eye Gel Cream
First things first: this is a gel—an unusually liquid one at that. Definitely not a cream. Made with 81% lavender flower water (not essential oil), it’s soothing, hydrating, and easy on sensitive skin. The formula blends antioxidants like gardenia, viola, and turmeric with mineral-rich red algae, niacinamide, and collagen. Given its fluid texture and a tube twice the standard size, I keep mine in the fridge and use it as a morning mask a couple of times a week. A generous layer, followed by your favorite face serum and a few minutes under an LED mask, is a quick ritual worth building into your day.

The Packaging Advantage
Due to the nature of gel textures—and the fact that some formulas can run on the looser side—I tend to recommend eye gels packaged in tubes, wands, or pumps over jars. Dipping fingers into a jar fresh out of the shower can melt the product on contact, since body heat is much higher than the gel’s temperature. Tubes, wands, and pumps also offer a more precise (and hygienic) way to dispense the right amount every time. The right formula will always be the priority, but the right packaging makes sure every drop performs as intended.
