
Over the years, I’ve heard plenty of complaints about Biologique Recherche cleansing milk formulas. And as with anything in skincare, what works beautifully for some won’t impress others. That said, BR has been getting a fair amount of criticism lately, and honestly, some of the newer formulas deserve a bit of side-eye.
But the cleansing milks? Those are genuinely good.
Personally, I think they’re pretty spectacular. I didn’t always feel that way though. And that’s exactly why I’m writing this.

Here’s what changed.
At one Biologique Recherche event, I heard a brand representative casually mention using the same cleansing milk to double cleanse. On one hand, that’s a valid approach. On the other, I’d prefer not to burn through an expensive cleanser twice as fast just to make it work.
So I started experimenting.

There was a learning curve, but once I figured out what these formulas actually need, the results clicked. And because the Lait cleansers get such mixed reviews, I think it’s worth saying this clearly: when used correctly, they do their job extremely well.
There are three steps to achieving a successful cleanse with non-foaming, milk-style formulas like these. Miss one, and the cleanser can feel underwhelming. Get all three right, and the experience changes entirely.
Below is the protocol.

Step 1: Use enough product
This is non-negotiable.
Milk cleansers don’t expand or lather the way foaming formulas do. In fact, they almost do the opposite. As you work them into the skin, they lose volume.
I rotate between Lait S.R. (purifying) and Lait VIP O2 (reviving and moisturizing). The VIP O2 is slightly more fluid in texture, but I still dispense three to five pumps of either to get a satisfying, effective cleanse.
Anything less and you’re short-changing the formula.

Step 2: Work it
Cleansing time matters here.
This is not a slap-on, rinse-off situation. You need to massage the product into the skin with intention. Set a timer if you have to, but aim for a full minute. Ninety seconds is even better.
My biggest tip is to start on completely dry skin. I focus first on congestion-prone areas like the nose and forehead, then work outward.
As I massage, I slowly dampen my fingers and introduce water. This is where the texture shifts from lotion to a true milk. I keep massaging while gradually adding more water until I’m just under the two-minute mark.
This step is where most people go wrong.

Step 3: Rinsing off (properly) is key
How you remove a cleansing milk is just as important as how you apply it.
A thorough rinse dramatically impacts how well these formulas perform. Over the past few years, I’ve become borderline obsessed with Clean Skin Club Towels and Skinsheet Cleansing Coins. They live up to the hype, and more importantly, they elevate this type of cleanse.

I soak a cloth in hot water, wring it out, place it over my face for five to ten seconds to gently steam, then wipe away the cleansing milk and everything it’s lifted from the skin. I repeat this once more.
What’s left is clean, comfortable, genuinely glowing skin.
Allow me to clarify one thing: you do not need to purchase a stack of single-use cloths. A cotton washcloth you have (a flannel if you may?) will absolutely suffice. Just make sure you wash it frequently to prevent bacteria growth because ew.

Who this method is not for
As effective as this cleansing method is, it’s not universal. And pretending otherwise would be disingenuous.
If your skin is highly reactive, redness-prone, or actively inflamed, this is probably not the approach for you. The combination of extended massage, heat, and physical removal can be too stimulating for compromised skin barriers, rosacea-leaning complexions, or anyone dealing with persistent flushing.

The same goes for acne-prone and very sensitive skin types, especially during active breakouts. While the cleansing milks themselves are gentle, this method introduces friction and warmth. Two things inflamed skin rarely appreciates.
On those days, a simpler, low-contact cleanse or a traditional double cleanse with a more rinse-forward formula is the safer call.
Where this shines is on normal, dry, dehydrated, or resilient skin types that tolerate massage well and benefit from thorough but non-stripping cleansing.
Context matters.

Final thoughts
This is not a ritual I’d recommend morning and evening. It’s time-consuming, and using a hot cleansing cloth twice a day is not something I want to subject my skin to regularly. That said, as an end-of-day, single-step cleanse, this method removes all of my tinted sunscreen and concealer without needing a second cleanser.
When all three steps are done properly, the cleansing milks stop feeling underwhelming and start performing the way they’re supposed to. And while this protocol isn’t exclusive to Biologique Recherche, I wanted to spell it out clearly for anyone who splurged on a BR Lait and felt disappointed. Before writing it off, try using it this way.
