The Ordinary just launched a Caffeine 3% + Escin 1% Face Serum, and the name will trip a few people up. This is not the Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG you reach for under tired eyes. It's a face serum, and the directions tell you to keep it away from the eye contour. I never found the old eye formula particularly remarkable. Yet here I am with a fresh bottle, equal parts intrigued and hopeful.
What is The Ordinary Caffeine 3% + Escin 1%?
In short, a morning energizing serum for the whole face. Caffeine at 3% for the fresher, less-tired look. Escin at 1% to amplify it, a horse chestnut extract that calms inflammation and stimulates microcirculation. That bump in blood flow brings slight depuffing, which is where the lift-and-sculpt language comes from. There's also a Bacillus ferment for hydration that sticks around.
Water opens the INCI, as you'd expect, but this serum carries real textural heft. It's milky. That's because Ethyl Macadamiate and Ethylhexyl Olivate sit right near the top, plant-derived emollients that give it an almost lotion-like viscosity.
Who is the Caffeine + Escin serum for?
If you're a fan of The Ordinary, you probably lean minimalist. This one is for anyone who wants a quick AM step to look more awake and a touch more defined. If your skin runs combination-to-oily, or you live somewhere humid, it doubles easily as a daytime moisturizer under sunscreen. Which is my way of saying: it's moisturizing. Surprisingly so.
How I use The Ordinary Caffeine + Escin serum
If you're new to The Ordinary, one piece of advice: not all of their serums layer well. It's rare that they do. My rule is to cocktail no more than two, and this Caffeine + Escin mixes beautifully with their Multi-Peptide + HA serum. Half a dropper of each in the palm, applied to clean, dry skin. The blend absorbs within seconds and leaves my skin looking radiant and awake.
A note on the eye area. The label says to avoid it, and I told you the same up top. That said, I extend this cocktail to the orbital bone with care, nowhere near the lash line, with no issue. Your call, not the brand's recommendation.
Used solo, I cannot stress this enough: apply it to dry skin. The emulsion-like texture doesn't belong on damp or misted skin. It slides, is slow to absorb, and can leave odd streaks. Trust me, I tried. To me, this is a perfect example of a booster serum. My skin loves it as an add-on.
Is The Ordinary Caffeine 3% + Escin 1% worth it?
At around $9, it's a low-risk thing to try. I rate a handful of The Ordinary's lineup, and this lands in the same easy-yes price bracket, even if it reads more like maintenance than a miracle.
