Do you ever randomly think of a brand you used to love and now hardly see anywhere? That’s Darphin for me. I actually had to look up whether it’s still owned by Estée Lauder. (It is.) In Spain, a handful of higher-end pharmacies carry an edited curation of the line, and while the prices run significantly higher than everything else on the shelf, Darphin is still around. Just… muted.
Recently, I spotted a bottle of their Instant Resurfacing Liquid Treatment and got a pang of nostalgia. A few weeks later, I’m here to share my thoughts, and to say I’m happy to have the brand back in rotation.
What is the new Liquid Treatment?
At first glance, it looks like a milky toner. And keeping things on-brand, Darphin elevates the formula with sensorial luxury: a silky texture and a soft floral scent. What it is, first and foremost, is a nightly leave-on exfoliant. So technically, a milky acid toner. But it’s also a hydrating essence with serum-like benefits.

So what’s actually in this Darphin resurfacing liquid?
It’s a formula that manages to be hydrating and exfoliating at once. It’s advised for nighttime use only (sun sensitivity being the obvious reason with any acid treatment), but it’s gentle enough to use every night rather than saving it for occasional treatment days.
The acid blend highlights citric, lactic, and tartaric acid, a trio of AHAs that get far less attention than glycolic or mandelic, but are no less effective, just gentler in how they resurface. There’s a touch of salicylic acid in there too, plus gluconolactone, a PHA that exfoliates without the dreaded sting.
It’s a slow-and-steady approach rather than a strip-it-all-off one, which makes sense for a leave-on treatment you’re meant to use nightly.
What sets it apart is the delivery vehicle: it’s lipid-forward, built on ingredients like phosphatidylcholine and lecithin that mimic your skin’s own sebum, so everything absorbs efficiently instead of sitting on the surface. Hyaluronic acid, panthenol, amino acids, caffeine, and turmeric root extract round things out, keeping the whole experience hydrating and soothing rather than… peeling. This also makes it a nice booster underneath whatever serum you layer next.
I’d guess this was formulated with more mature skin in mind, skin that’s more dry than oily thanks to aging, gravity, and general loss of elasticity, though the gentleness makes it approachable for most skin types.
What to expect in terms of results
Darphin emphasizes the word “instant” in the name, which is a bold move in the age of filters and sponsored content. In reality, the resurfacing is gentle, the glow is subtle but present, and the hydration is the part that actually is instant, noticeable within seconds of application.
How and when to use it
The acid concentration isn’t aggressive (again, slow and steady is the right call for a leave-on treatment), but it’s still best used as part of your evening routine. In terms of layering: after cleanser, before serum.
Given its viscous, milky consistency, skip the cotton pad if you want the full benefit. Dispense a few dashes into your palm and press directly into skin. There’s slip to the texture, but it never feels oily. The glide is cushiony, never tingly, and it absorbs in record time. True to Darphin form, the floral scent is there but dissipates quickly.
Layering with retinol
We’re all different, and what my skin tolerates may not match your experience. Personally, I find this formula plays well with retinoids. A few times a week, I apply tretinoin after the Darphin Instant Resurfacing Liquid Treatment and follow with a moisturizer. I reach for tretinoin 2–3 times a week and haven’t had any issues with redness or irritation. This isn’t a universal recommendation. Patch test always, and pay attention to how your own skin responds.
Final verdict
It’s very nice. Zero buyer’s remorse. My only wish (not a complaint!) is that I wish it came in a travel size, because the hefty glass bottle is not leaving my apartment. That said, on the road it would be a great multitasker to have on hand for both its hydrating and exfoliating properties.
