The cult-classic exfoliant gets a clever new format.

Few products are as instantly recognizable as the Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. The little black bottle has long been a staple for oilier skin types. I have had my share of T-zone drama and visible pores over the years but never fully embraced the original.

Why? The texture was the issue. Too viscous, slightly too slippery, and not exactly fast-absorbing. I always preferred the Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA from the RESIST line instead. So when Paula's Choice introduced a pad format of the same formula, I was curious. The 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner Pads are good. Really good.

What Are They?
Generously sized pre-soaked rectangles, large enough to cover face and neck in a single swipe. I always include behind the ears. The pads are fully biodegradable, which is worth noting given the individually wrapped format.

What’s in them
The soaking liquid is the same minimalist formula as the original: 2% salicylic acid, antioxidant-rich green tea extract, and a handful of humectants and stabilizers. Eight ingredients total. Paula's Choice leave-on exfoliants have always been about simplicity and consistency and this is no exception.
The pads appear dual-textured but even the more textured side is very gentle. There is no physical exfoliation happening here. The salicylic acid does the work by clearing out pores while the pad provides a clean, precise application.

Why I prefer them to the liquid
No residue. That alone puts them above the liquid version for me. Whether I was using too much of the original or the finger-patting method was never right for me, these feel considerably more elegant in use.
The convenience factor is also real. These are travel-friendly in a way the liquid never quite managed. They remind me of the ARCONA Triad Pads in that regard, which I keep in my TSA kit without fail.

While We’re Talking Paula’s Choice Wins…
Here are a few formulas from the brand that deserve a quick shoutout. And for quick usage instruction shortcut: all of these can be applied over the 2% BHA pad. You can even mix and match: BHA pad + retinyl or azelaic acid + barrier repairing moisturizer (my preferred night combination). Or do the BHA pad + peptide moisturizer + sunscreen during the day. 🙂

PRO Retinaldehyde Dual-Phase Treatment
I was loyal to the CLINICAL 1% Retinol for years but this has edged it out. With both retinaldehyde and an oil-soluble retinoid ester it is effective for breakouts and fine lines simultaneously. One practical note: the yellow tint can stain white pillowcases. Apply a thin layer, let it absorb, and seal with moisturizer.

10% Azelaic Acid Booster
My skin’s become more redness-prone in recent years, so brightening has been trickier. This airy cream layers seamlessly and helps with pigmentation. And yes, I hated The Ordinary’s version (chalky, sticky, and not worth the hype). This one delivers. Just keep in mind that results take time.

Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer
One of my favorite post-retinol night creams. Ceramides, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, and watermelon seed oil in a plush, cushiony formula. Straightforward but elevated, and one of the few moisturizers I reach for when skin needs a genuine reset.

Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Moisturizer
Already covered in its own post and still holding strong in my routine. Light but substantial, smooth without being greasy. At 45, my skin is very appreciative of what it does for firmness and moisture.
