The cult-classic exfoliant gets a clever new format.

Few products are as instantly recognizable as the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA toner. Officially named the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, the little black bottle has long been a staple for those with oilier skin types. And while I’ve definitely had my share of T-zone drama and visible pores, I never fully embraced the original.

Why? Mostly the texture. A little too viscous, slightly too slippery, and not exactly fast-absorbing. I always preferred the Daily Pore-Refining Treatment with 2% BHA from the RESIST line, which checked every box. That’s why I was curious (okay, cautiously excited) when Paula’s Choice launched a new addition to the 2% BHA lineup. And I’m happy to report the 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner Pads are good. Really good.

What Are They?
These new toner pads are generously sized rectangles, pre-soaked in the same salicylic acid formula as the original. They’re large enough to cover your face and neck. And yes, I always swipe behind my ears. The brand also notes that the pads are fully biodegradable. While the individually wrapped format isn’t the most eco-conscious, I’ve definitely seen worse.

What’s Inside?
The soaking liquid is the same minimalist formula: 2% salicylic acid, antioxidant-rich green tea extract, and a few humectants and stabilizers. Just eight ingredients total. When it comes to Paula’s Choice leave-on exfoliants, it’s all about simplicity and consistency.
The pads themselves appear dual-textured, but even the more textured side is very gentle. You’re not getting any physical exfoliation here. The salicylic acid does the heavy lifting by clearing out pores, while the motion of the pad is more of a sweep than a scrub.

Why I Like Them
The biggest win? These don’t leave behind a residue. That alone puts them above the liquid version for me. Maybe I was using too much, or maybe patting it in with fingers wasn’t my best move, but these feel far more elegant during application.
Also, while I wouldn’t call myself lazy, I really appreciate convenience, especially when packing for a trip. These remind me of the Arcona Triad Pads (I’m partial to the To-Go version), which I always keep in my TSA-friendly travel stash. We all have a drawer or bag of deluxe minis reserved for weekends away, right? I absolutely do. $16 (10ct)

While We’re Talking Paula’s Choice Wins…
Here are a few formulas from the brand that deserve a quick shoutout. And for quick usage instruction shortcut: all of these can be applied over the 2% BHA pad. You can even mix and match: BHA pad + retinyl or azelaic acid + barrier repairing moisturizer (my preferred night combination). Or do the BHA pad + peptide moisturizer + sunscreen during the day. 🙂

PRO Retinaldehyde Dual-Phase Treatment
I was loyal to the CLINICAL 1% Retinol for years, but this one has edged it out. With both retinaldehyde and an oil-soluble retinoid ester (oleyl adapalenate), it’s effective for breakouts and fine lines alike. One caveat: the yellow tint can stain white pillowcases. To avoid that, apply a thin layer, let it absorb, and seal it in with a moisturizer. $68 (30ml)

10% Azelaic Acid Booster
My skin’s become more redness-prone in recent years, so brightening has been trickier. This airy cream layers seamlessly and helps with pigmentation. And yes, I hated The Ordinary’s version (chalky, sticky, and not worth the hype). This one delivers. Just keep in mind that results take time. $39 (30ml)

Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer
One of my favorite post-retinol night creams, this formula blends ceramides, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, and watermelon seed oil for a plush, cushiony feel. It’s straightforward but elevated, and one of the few moisturizers I reach for when my skin needs a reset. $42 (50ml)

Pro-Collagen Peptide Plumping Moisturizer
This one already got its own blog post, and it’s still holding strong in my routine. Light but substantial, smooth but not greasy, it’s an all-around crowd-pleaser. If you’re over 30, this is a smart addition. At 45, my skin is very appreciative of its moisturizing and firming skills. $49 (50ml)
