Alpha-H skincare Essentials review

Alpha-H is the Australian brand that turned glycolic acid into a cult habit, and its Essential Cleansing Balm and Daily Essential Vitamin Mist are the everyday basics built around that reputation. One will always be a little ‘extra’, but essentials are where a good routine begins.

On a trip to London, I had the pleasure of catching up with one of my favorite beauty publicists and Tom Ogden, then International Training Manager for Alpha-H, whose legacy at the brand still carries a lot of weight. To have walked away educated is an understatement. Not only is Tom a wealth of information, but he’s engaging and funny, and literally has no pores. When he speaks, you listen.

The verdict: 4.25 / 5

Alpha-H got me hooked on a face mask but I stayed for everything else. And yes, Liquid Gold is 100% worth the hype.

Why Alpha-H?

Alpha-H built its name on Liquid Gold, the 5% glycolic acid resurfacing treatment that has had a cult following for years. The rest of the range follows the same logic: resurface first, then support the skin with barrier care and antioxidants. New to the brand? Start with Liquid Gold (or Liquid Gold Rose if your skin is sensitive), then add the Essentials below. I’ve also reviewed the Liquid Gold Instant Facial, the Beauty Sleep Power Peel, and Protection Plus Daily SPF 50.

Do not mistake the ‘Essentials’ for ‘basics’ because there is nothing basic about these impressive formulas. Think of them as necessary steps in an effective anti-aging routine.

Alpha-H Essential Cleansing Balm Review

This gem comes in a jar with a press down lid dispenser, which is a rarity in the world of cleansing balms, and which allows for the freshest dose every time. Blended to perfection, the botanical medley includes Coconut, Rosehip, Rose Geranium, and Grapeseed Oils along with Sea Buckthorn Extract, Vitamin E, and Bisabolol. Truly a treatment product, it soothes, repairs, and strengthens the skin’s protective barrier and is a perfect fit for anyone with normal to dry skin.

Alpha-H Essential Cleansing Balm

Those who wear makeup, practice double cleansing or enjoy a nourishing balm formula will love this balm. Applied to dry skin, it morphs into an oil that melts away dirt and grime and, since it’s safe to use on the delicate eye area, even the most stubborn waterproof mascara. Add a few drops of water and watch it turn milky as it rinses off leaving your skin perfectly cleansed, hydrated and comfortable. The delicate rose aroma is all natural as the balm contains no added fragrance. Shop it at Space NK

Alpha-H Essential Cleansing Balm and Daily Essential Vitamin Mist

Alpha-H Daily Essential Vitamin Mist: Toner or Setting Spray?

You may have heard of urban aging, and let me assure you, this is no urban legend. While everyone is focused on the sun and its damaging rays, our skin is constantly exposed to environmental elements that age us as quickly (think pollution, radiation, smoke, or pesticides used in some of the food we eat). Featuring a potent antioxidant that is Moringa Seed Extract, Vitamins A, B, C, D, and E with a proprietary Pollushield™ technology, the Alpha-H mist is so much more than a spritz of freshness.

Alpha-H Daily Essential Vitamin Mist

Creating an invisible matrix that blocks oxidative stress, the Daily Essential Vitamin Mist can be used as a toner, a makeup setting spray, or a refresher throughout the day. Lightweight and completely non-sticky, it revives and fortifies the skin for a plump and glowing appearance. Ideal during travel, the exhilarating blend of Orange Flower and Rose Extracts provides uplifting aromatherapy as well. Shop it at Space NK

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Rose: The One to Buy First

Full disclosure: I’m obsessed. Liquid Gold Rose is a more approachable version of the cult classic Liquid Gold, made for those with more sensitive skin. Fueled by the signature concentration of 5% Glycolic Acid, this upgrade is buffered with the addition of soothing Rose Water, Lotus, and Orchid Petal Extracts. Beyond impressive in its performance, it refines the look of enlarged pores, brightens and evens out dull skin tone, and firms and smooths over bumpy, rough texture.

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Rose

Simply swipe a saturated cotton pad on freshly cleansed skin before bed and follow with a moisturizer. Did I mention there is absolutely no tingle nor discomfort? Since Alpha Hydroxies make your skin more susceptible to sunburn, be sure to wear SPF of at least 30 during the day. Shop it at Space NK

Alpha-H Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alpha-H a good skincare brand?

Yes. Alpha-H is one of the most respected names in glycolic acid skincare, and the range is consistent from cleanser to treatment. I rate it 4.25 out of 5 overall.

What is Alpha-H best known for?

Liquid Gold, its 5% glycolic acid resurfacing treatment, is the product that built the brand. Liquid Gold Rose is the gentler version for sensitive skin.

Can the Alpha-H Vitamin Mist be used as a setting spray?

Yes. The Daily Essential Vitamin Mist works as a toner, a makeup setting spray, or a refresher during the day. It is lightweight and non-sticky, so it won’t disturb your makeup.

What’s the difference between Liquid Gold and Liquid Gold Rose?

Both are built on 5% glycolic acid. Liquid Gold Rose adds rose water, lotus, and orchid petal extracts to buffer the acid, which makes it the better pick for sensitive skin.

Is the Alpha-H Essential Cleansing Balm good for dry skin?

Yes. Coconut, rosehip, rose geranium, and grapeseed oils plus sea buckthorn make it best for normal to dry skin, and it is safe to use around the eyes. For more options, see my favorite face and body cleansers and my Augustinus Bader Cleansing Balm review.
