This glowing complexion is fruit-derived.

Glow Recipe built its reputation on the watermelon line, and the Watermelon Glow BHA + PHA Pore-Tight Toner is the formula that best explains why. It is not just a hydrating toner with a pretty bottle. The ingredient deck is genuinely thoughtful, and for combination skin dealing with enlarged pores and mild congestion, it delivers results that most exfoliating toners at this price point do not.

What the Glow Recipe Watermelon Toner actually is

This is a hybrid formula sitting between a hydrating essence and a gentle liquid exfoliant. The texture is viscous and slightly stretchy, which is unusual for a toner. It applies cleanly, absorbs fast, and leaves no tackiness. The scent is light, somewhere between cucumber and honeydew. It works as an AM or PM step.

What’s in it?

The exfoliant combination is where this gets interesting. The formula uses two types of acids working at different depths.

Betaine Salicylate is the BHA source. This is an oil-soluble acid derived from sugar beet, functionally similar to salicylic acid in its ability to penetrate inside the pore and address congestion. It is gentler than standard salicylic acid, which makes it suitable for daily use.

Gluconolactone is the PHA. Polyhydroxy Acids have a larger molecular weight than AHAs, which means they work only on the very surface of the skin. For anyone who has found glycolic or lactic acid too intense, PHA delivers the same smoothing and brightening benefits without the irritation risk. It also has humectant properties, so it hydrates as it exfoliates.

Willow Bark Extract adds a secondary BHA source. Tea Tree Extract contributes antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory support, which is directly relevant for pores that are prone to congestion.

The hydration side of the formula is anchored by Cactus Water Extract, which has a high electrolyte content and strong water-binding capacity, and Watermelon Extract, which brings vitamins and amino acids. Hyaluronic Acid, Cucumber, Hibiscus, and Licorice Root Extracts round out the ingredient deck.

Does it actually tighten pores?

Visibly, yes. Not dramatically, and no toner can physically shrink a pore. What it does is keep pores cleaner and less congested, which makes them appear smaller and more refined with consistent use. After several weeks of daily use, the difference in overall clarity and texture is noticeable.

It is not a replacement for a stronger acid treatment. I use it alongside niacinamide in the morning and retinol at night, and the BHA + PHA toner complements both without conflict.

How to use it

Apply to clean skin before serum and moisturiser. I skip the cotton pad and apply directly to my palms, then press into skin. It layers cleanly under SPF and does not interfere with any actives used after it.

Is it worth $36?

At $36 for 150ml this is reasonable value for a formula with a legitimate acid combination. The bottle is glass, which I appreciate. The size lasts several months with daily use.
