Let’s just say the day I purchased the Epicutis Lipid Serum, I had entirely different shopping plans lined up. On a recent US visit, I walked into a local spa to get a backup of the Environ Seriénce Night Serum. (NWCT peeps, make sure to check out Skin & Tonic in New Milford, CT.) I walked out with something else from Environ and this Epicutis serum instead. Why? More below.

My plan was to get a soothing serum for off-retinol nights. Something hydrating, replenishing, balancing, and barrier-strengthening. Most of all, something soothing. In the past, that something was the Environ Seriénce Night Serum. This time, after speaking with an aesthetician, I was inclined to try the Epicutis Lipid Serum on her suggestion. I will always treasure Environ, so I picked up a bottle of the Skin EssentiA® AVST Moisturizer 4. This time, though, I paired it with the Epicutis formula.

The verdict: 4.75 / 5

Brilliant in its simplicity, this serum effectively balances, soothes, and adds much-needed glow.

What intrigued me about the Epicutis Lipid Serum?

In short: simplicity. There is a lot to be said for short but effective ingredient lists. Epicutis bets on a short stack without shortcuts, and the Lipid Serum delivers. Less is more is not a new concept in skincare. Still, I always appreciate a thoughtful approach to any skincare conundrum. Give the skin precisely what it needs and nothing more.

What makes this Epicutis serum effective?

Eight ingredients, one of them water. Here is what the other seven do.

TSC (Disodium Tetramethylhexadecenyl Succinoyl Cysteine). The star of the formula and the reason for the price tag. It is a patented anti-inflammatory that calms stressed, reactive skin. More on it below.

Glycerin. The gold-standard humectant. It draws water into the upper layers of the skin and holds it there. It is also a big part of why this serum feels so cushiony.

Propanediol. A plant-derived glycol, typically made from corn sugar. It hydrates, softens, and helps the formula spread evenly across the skin.

Pentylene Glycol. Another humectant with a second job. It has natural antimicrobial properties. Together with propanediol, it keeps the formula protected without a conventional preservative. That is rare, and a real plus for sensitive skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate. The salt form of hyaluronic acid. It binds water at the skin’s surface for an instant plumping effect. Paired with glycerin, it delivers hydration that lasts.

Sodium Phytate. A plant-derived chelator made from phytic acid. It binds trace metals that would otherwise destabilize the formula. Think of it as quality control in a bottle.

Citric Acid. Used in a tiny amount to keep the pH in a skin-friendly range. It is not here to exfoliate.

What is TSC in skincare (and why should I care)?

TSC is a patented molecule developed by a Princeton biochemist to turn down the inflammation signals that irritated skin sends out. Think of it as a volume knob for redness, sensitivity, and the low-grade stress that slowly ages skin, with antioxidant and antibacterial support thrown in. It will not erase wrinkles, but it calms the skin so well that everything else in your routine goes down easier. You may also see it called SIG-1273, its original development code.

How and when I use the Epicutis Lipid Serum

I’ll get the elephant in the room out of the way first. The dropper is not the best. You have to dunk it into the bottle with the pipette top squeezed, let it “inhale” the juice, then dispense it onto your fingers.

The good news is that one massive drop of this Epicutis serum covers your entire face. It is one of the juiciest, most viscous serum textures I have come across, and I love everything about it. The Lipid Serum glides on almost slippery, then absorbs in seconds. Skin is left instantly hydrated and nourished.

My initial hunch was to reach for this Epicutis formula on off-retinol nights. Why? I haven’t had a laser treatment in six years. I am not considering other in-office treatments like microneedling either. I’m content with my peptide and growth factor serums combined with retinoids. Really. I’m thrilled. But I also love a soothing moment every other night or so. I don’t call it skin cycling (full disclosure, I dislike the term quite a bit). I listen to my skin and know when it’s time to dial things up or down.

Epicutis Lipid Serum with Angela Caglia Cell Forté and Sweet Chemistry

On nights I feel extra, I cocktail the Epicutis Lipid Serum with Angela Caglia Cell Forté. Other times, I add a few drops of the iconic Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair or my favorite face oil. A cushiony night cream on top (currently YINA Hydracloud) completes the ultimate sequence for rested, healthy-looking skin by morning.

Who is the Epicutis Lipid Serum for?

The Epicutis Lipid Serum is built for skin that is stressed, reactive, or recovering. Think retinoid users, sensitive and redness-prone skin, and anyone coming off an in-office treatment like a laser or peel. Shaving irritation counts too. If your skin is calm and resilient, you will still enjoy the hydration. You just won’t see the full benefit of what TSC does.

Is it worth it?

I won’t sugarcoat it. The $250 price tag is hefty. A few months in, I can assure you this bottle will last a while, which makes the splurge easier to digest. Would I repurchase? Yes, without hesitation.

Epicutis Lipid Serum FAQ

Is the Epicutis Lipid Serum worth $250?

For sensitive, stressed, or retinol-treated skin, yes. One drop covers the whole face, so a bottle lasts months. If your skin is calm and resilient, a simpler hydrating serum will do.

Can I use the Epicutis Lipid Serum with retinol?

Yes. It has no exfoliating acids or reactive ingredients, so it layers easily. I use it on off-retinol nights, but it also works as a buffer before or after your retinoid.

Does the Epicutis Lipid Serum contain lipids?

Not in the traditional sense. There are no oils, ceramides, or fatty acids in the formula. The name refers to TSC, which has a fatty, lipid-like tail attached to an amino acid.

What is SIG-1273?

SIG-1273 is the development code for TSC, the patented anti-inflammatory in this serum. You will see both names used for the same molecule.

Is the Epicutis Lipid Serum good for sensitive skin?

It is one of the safest bets out there. It is fragrance-free, has eight ingredients, and contains no conventional preservatives, essential oils, or botanical extracts.
