Big in Japan: The Cure Natural Aqua Gel Review You Actually Need

Using the Cure Aqua Gel Japanese exfoliator.

One product has reportedly sold every 12 seconds in Japan for years. That product is the Cure Natural Aqua Gel, a gentle water-based exfoliator that has been a staple in Japanese skincare long before the rest of the world started paying attention.

What is it

Cure Natural Aqua Gel sits in its own category. It is not a scrub, not an acid exfoliant, and not a mask. The formula is built around 90% activated hydrogen water, infused with aloe vera, rosemary, and ginkgo extracts. It is free of fragrance, color, alcohol, and preservatives. The ingredient list is about as minimal as it gets for an exfoliating product.

The exfoliation mechanism is physical but entirely non-abrasive. When massaged onto dry skin, the gel congeals and forms small white balls that lift away dead cells and surface buildup. It is more satisfying than it has any right to be.

How to use it

This step is important and most people skip it: apply on completely dry skin in a room with dry air. Step out of a steamy bathroom before you start. Dispense one to two pumps and apply to the face, avoiding eyes and lips. The consistency is more liquid gel than traditional gel and can run if you are not careful. After two minutes, massage in circular motions. Rinse clean.

The result is noticeably softer, smoother skin after a single use. It is the kind of product that makes you question everything else in your exfoliation rotation.

A note on limitations

Cure Natural Aqua Gel is an excellent surface exfoliator but it does not address congestion or blackheads the way a chemical exfoliant does. If that is a concern, use it alongside a BHA treatment. The Paula's Choice 2% BHA is the obvious pairing and the combination works well. Think of the Cure gel as your physical refresh and the BHA as your deeper weekly treatment.

Where to buy

The product is imported so availability varies. YesStyle and Stylevana (code SHOPBART saves you 10%) both carry it reliably. You can also find it on Amazon. Expect to pay around $30 to $40 for the 250ml bottle.

I like simple face washes. Does it leave a little layer afterwards or is you face clean clean?

I just wanted to let you know I spent the last couple hours reading all of your blog posts and it cheered me up after a week of being ill beyond belief with some virus. I’m a luxury product junkie like you so I had a lot of cathartic laughs. I have to travel WAAAY too much for the business I own (believe it or not, I work with roller coasters and theme parks exclusively) and the amount of product I take with me is *sick*. I keep hoping I’m not the only one out there and I’m betting you feel my pain. 😉

You totally made my day! So happy you enjoyed the posts! (P.S. I am mortified of roller coasters). xo
