Petrolatum-powered and unapologetically simple, the skincare classic that actually works for everyone.

While I love indulging in a self-care ritual, sometimes going back to basics feels just as good—if not better. It all depends on what my skin needs, of course, but I’ve learned that simplifying my routine often works wonders. That’s exactly why I keep Aquaphor Healing Ointment in every size and applicator type available. It just works.
And no, this is not a post about slugging. Hear me out.

Petrolatum in Skincare. Let's discuss.
Truth is, the beauty space can be overwhelmingly noisy, and unfortunately, misinformation about occlusive products like Aquaphor is everywhere. The disdain toward petrolatum seems to have no bounds, but when you break down the science and actually use these formulas correctly, the results are impressive. It’s simple: trust the process, and the results will follow.

What is Aquaphor?
Aquaphor is a brand under the Beiersdorf umbrella, which also owns NIVEA, Eucerin, Coppertone, and—believe it or not—La Prairie. Yes, the ultra-prestige Swiss skincare brand best known for its caviar-infused anti-aging treatments.
While Aquaphor’s Healing Ointment is its most iconic product, the brand also offers formulas specifically for lips and baby care.

What is Petrolatum?
Contrary to some myths, petrolatum is not the same as gasoline. It’s not toxic, it’s not flammable, and perhaps most surprisingly, it won’t clog your pores. Is it the most elegant skincare ingredient? Not exactly. But when it comes to creating an occlusive layer that helps the skin heal itself, it’s unmatched.

Also known as petroleum jelly, petrolatum is a semi-greasy substance that forms a barrier on the skin, preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Because it doesn’t absorb, I don’t actively seek it out in everyday skincare products, but when my skin needs healing, nothing compares. Guess what: it’s FDA-approved, safe, and incredibly effective when used correctly.

What’s in Aquaphor Healing Ointment?
When shopping for Aquaphor Healing Ointment, look for the product with the red stripe under the brand name—that’s the multi-purpose salve I swear by. That's the one I get every time I see it on special because the travel-size tube is the ultimate essential.
Its formula consists of 41% petrolatum, supported by mineral oil (emollient), ceresin (thickening agent), lanolin alcohol (moisturizing), panthenol (Vitamin B5, nourishing), glycerin (humectant), and bisabolol (soothing chamomile derivative). For reference: the original ointment is fragrance-free and colorless, with a slightly sticky, tacky feel—so apply sparingly and only where needed.

Other Aquaphor Formulas You Should Try

Ointment Body Spray – A Less Greasy Alternative
If you want something more user-friendly, the Aquaphor Ointment Body Spray is a game-changer. It contains the same ingredients as the Healing Ointment but is propelled (literally) by butane, a natural gas that creates an airier, less sticky application. Personally, I love using this on dry elbows and knees before getting dressed—it absorbs better than the ointment but still provides lasting hydration.

Healing Balm Stick – Convenient & Mess-Free
For an on-the-go option, the Healing Balm Stick is a must. It contains 30% petrolatum, plus avocado oil, shea butter, and beeswax for extra nourishment. Most recently, I used it to heal a post-pimple red spot at the very tip of my nose (the worst place for a breakout). A few quick touch-ups throughout the day, and within 48 hours, the redness was gone. P.S. This stick is great for lips, cuticles, and travel.

How I Use Aquaphor Healing Ointment
1. Overnight Lip Balm
Nothing compares. If your lips are severely dry or chapped, a thick layer of Aquaphor Healing Ointment overnight makes a world of difference. The brand’s Lip Repair Stick? Shockingly underwhelming. Stick with the ointment.
2. Minor Scrapes & Scratches
Never apply Aquaphor to open wounds, but for healing cuts or scratches, the occlusive barrier speeds up the repair process. It’s also excellent for post-tattoo care.
3. Pimple Aftercare
I’ll admit it—I pick at pimples. And every time, I regret it. Applying a dot of Aquaphor with a Q-tip throughout the day (and again overnight) reduces redness and swelling within 48 hours.
4. Overnight Foot Balm
A thick layer of Aquaphor on dry, rough heels, followed by a pair of socks, works overnight wonders. The Hand and Foot Masks are a great quick fix but not as intense in their performance.
5. Ashy Knees & Elbows
The Body Spray is my favorite fix for dry patches anywhere on the body. Unlike body oils and lotions, it’s best applied to dry skin. I keep mine right outside the shower as a reminder.
6. Dry Cuticles
My chronic cuticle picking means I always have a travel-size Healing Ointment nearby. It instantly soothes and prevents further damage.

What Aquaphor Is Not That Great As
• Brow gel (too shiny, no hold)
• Highlighter (meh, there are better options)
• Makeup remover (plenty of affordable cleansing balms do the job better)
My take on slugging
I have zero interest. I cannot understand the hype and don't believe in the touted benefits. Personally, I find the concept to be a strange novelty born out of boredom and pressure to create beauty content on social media. There, I said it.
Where to Buy Aquaphor
Check out Ulta.com and Target.com as well as lookfantastic.com for various sizes and formulas. There is also an Amazon store worth exploring.
If you’re new to Aquaphor, start with the Original Healing Ointment—and definitely grab the travel-size duo. If you want a more convenient option, the Balm Stick is a solid choice. Prices range from $6.99 for a travel tube duo to just under $20 for the largest 14oz jar of the original ointment.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use Aquaphor on your face?
Yes, but sparingly and only where needed. It works well as an overnight spot treatment for dry patches, post-pimple marks, or irritated skin. Apply a small amount with a fingertip or Q-tip rather than all over the face — it's occlusive and a little goes a long way.
Does Aquaphor clog pores?
No. Despite its thick texture, petrolatum is non-comedogenic. It sits on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, which means it creates a protective barrier without blocking pores.
What is the difference between Aquaphor and Vaseline?
Both are petrolatum-based but Aquaphor's formula includes additional ingredients — glycerin, panthenol, bisabolol, and lanolin alcohol — that add hydrating and soothing benefits. Vaseline is pure petrolatum. Aquaphor is the more versatile skincare option of the two.
Can you use Aquaphor on pimples?
On open pimples, no. On post-pimple marks or healing skin, yes. A small dot applied with a Q-tip throughout the day and overnight significantly reduces redness and speeds up recovery. It's one of my most reached-for uses.
Is Aquaphor good for dry lips?
It's the best option for severely dry or chapped lips. A thick layer overnight works better than most dedicated lip treatments including Aquaphor's own Lip Repair Stick, which is surprisingly underwhelming by comparison.
