TULA Sunscreens Ranked According To My Preference

Fun fact: TULA was my very first affiliate brand partnership when I started writing this blog. Back in 2014, in a rather unique business move, TULA launched exclusively on QVC, something I believe had not been done previously. Co-founded by Dr. Roshini Raj, a board-certified gastroenterologist, the line focused on balancing and protecting the skin’s microbiome. Kind of like gut health for the skin. Still very much present on QVC, the brand is now also available at major beauty retailers. Time for a shameless plug: my code OMGBART will save you 15% on anything at tula.com.

Having grown leaps and bounds, TULA is no longer that tight 4-step edit. There are serum and exfoliant options, a few masks, color correcting formulas, and most importantly, three sunscreens that will help you develop this critical skincare habit. Four if you count the skin serum tint. This is my quick overview of the TULA’s daily SPF variations ranked in order of preference by my finicky, combination, congestion-prone skin.

Mineral Magic SPF 30

Hands down my favorite, this lightweight fluid has a peach hue but won’t tint the skin per se. I think of it as unifying with a satin finish. Skin appears more even-toned without the traditional color payoff. It’s super silky, takes a minute to ‘set’, and leaves the skin looking fresh and radiant. All mineral filters include Titanium Dioxide 3.6%, Zinc Oxide 2.34%. Other ingredient callouts: s6pro complex® (a patent pending super six blend of prebiotics & probiotics), Willowherb, Red Algae, Peach, and Wild Butterfly Ginger Root Extracts. This one is not water resistant so think of it as your go-to for everyday use, not on pool or beach days.  $38 (45ml)

Ultimate Sun Serum SPF 50

Love the product, dislike the name. To me, the word ‘serum’ implies a pre-moisturizer step and we all know sunscreen goes on last. I think of it as a pick for oilier skin types or for those who take a minimalist approach to skincare. Almost runny in texture, this all-mineral sunscreen (Titanium Dioxide 6%, Zinc Oxide 5%) applies great over my water-based serums in the morning. If you’re a re-applier throughout the day, you will find the consistency super user-friendly. Zero white cast as the formula sets with a lovely soft matte finish. It also has a really nice fruity scent, which I can’t quite pinpoint. Other glow boosting INCI highlights mirror Mineral Magic with the addition of anti-aging Pentapeptides. $42 (50m)

Protect + Glow Daily Sunscreen SPF 30

This is a gel formula that, of the three, feels the most ‘skincare.’ And while technically a gel, it is a bit gritty but blends in very smoothly. It uses chemical filters (Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 10%, Octisalate 5%) to protect against UV exposure, including blue light. And while this everyday SPF doesn’t feature the brand’s signature s6pro complex®, it contains Pineapple and Papaya Extracts to deliver a more even tone over time. Personally, I find the glow to be subtle (and I like it). Though it absorbs very quickly, I can still ‘feel it’ on my skin. It’s not sticky or tacky but it has that slightly tightening feeling similar to a gel drying on the skin. I have a friend in Florida who absolutely loves it… maybe it does better in warmer temps with more humidity? The light sunscreen scent dissipates quickly. $38 (50ml)
