Non-Millennial Tries: Glossier Solution Exfoliating Skin Perfector

Having navigated the P50 formula landscape the past few years, I’m no longer a stranger to acid toning. Since most recently, I had embraced and enjoyed impressive liquid exfoliants from tarte and REN, it was only fair that I dip my cotton pads into the new Glossier Solution. After three weeks of daily use, below are my musings. Spoiler alert: Biologique Recherche has nothing to worry about.

told you I’m no stranger…

First things first…

Acids are a sensitive subject. Literally. Everybody’s skin reacts differently to these chemical compounds, which can work miracles for many but trigger redness and irritation in others. This post, therefore, is very personal. About me: thirty-seven, thick combination skin, enlarged pores, ex-smoker, social butterfly who thinks sleep is overrated. Toner or pad, *something* with acid is a non-negotiable step in my skincare routine.

What’s in the Solution?

What we know for sure is that Glossier Solution contains 0.5% Salicylic Acid. That’s great news for those with congested complexions prone to breaking out. Since BHA is oil soluble, it penetrates deep within the pore to eliminate harmful bacteria and to deliver a smoother, more refined surface.

.5% BHA

The remaining 9.5% blend of actives consists of AHA and PHA, the latter of which has a larger molecular structure than Lactic and Glycolic Acid. This makes it a less aggressive and remarkably effective resurfacing agent. While the exact ratio is undisclosed (proprietary blends everywhere), the Solution also features Niacinamide, which helps correct dull and uneven skin tone. Yes, there is added fragrance. No, it doesn’t irritate my skin.

Glossier Cotton Rounds – cute but not great

How-To:

Glossier recommends reaching for Solution once each day. If you choose to do so in the morning, be sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Chemical exfoliation makes the skin significantly more prone to sun damage, so while I never skip my sunblock, I prefer to use acids at bedtime.

See these cotton pads? Get them.

Saturate a cotton pad (to be honest, those from Glossier are just OK and have nothing on my favorite, White Rabbit, which are less expensive and available on Amazon Prime) and swipe across your freshly-cleansed face before applying your serum, oil, or moisturizer.

Results

My goal was to see how Solution stood up against clogged pores since I don’t suffer from acne. The scent is barely there (it has these French antiseptic vibes) and my skin did not experience any tingling or burning. I followed it with a hydrating essence (Fresh Black Tea and Kombucha) and facial oil immediately after it was absorbed by my skin. I decided not to lay off my other actives such as retinoids or Vitamin C and found that including Solution in my routine didn’t trigger any unwanted reactions. Then again, my skin is far from being sensitive.

What I noticed: tighter looking pores and a subtle yet visible glow. I like it. Tarte’s Knockout still wins in my book and nothing compares to my P50 1970 but I can see this being a hit, especially with loyalists to the brand.

This cleanser is seriously great.

If you’re apprehensive about acid toning, or new to Solution, go slowly and proceed with caution. Every other day is a great starting point. Be sure you have a juicy Hyaluronic Acid serum on hand to soothe and hydrate whenever trying out a new liquid exfoliant. Just in case.

What are you currently using in the AM and PM? If you tell me exactly what you apply, I’ll tell you where I’d slot in the Glossier Solution. Thanks!
