Hm, how do I say this? I love the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. That one. The pricey one. And while admittedly, it costs more than the monthly payment on my Volkswagen SUV, I can’t emphasize enough the true genius of this Dyson invention. I recognize that this may fall beyond your budget. Such a purchase should be prioritized accordingly. With that said, if your budget allows for an investment in the self-care department, I fully support this decision. Here is my Dyson Supersonic review, now with almost a decade of daily use behind it.
What Is the Dyson Supersonic?
Known for sexying up home appliances, Dyson is best known for their vacuum cleaners. Over the years, their innovative launches have included bladeless fans, air purifiers, and the brilliant commercial strength, ultra hygienic hair dryers. Four years in the making with over 100 engineers, Dyson pumped $67 million into the development of the Supersonic Hair Dryer and earned 100 patents. The result? The only hair dryer you’ll ever need. In the history of ever.
Dyson Hair Dryer Design: Why the Motor Is in the Handle
Slim, tall, and easy to maneuver, the seriously powerful motor is located at the bottom of the handle instead of the head. Turning the concept literally upside down, it also uses patented Air Multiplier™ technology to deliver a high pressure, focused jet of air. Compact in all the places that matter, it is significantly more quiet and feels incredibly balanced in your hand. Equipped with a pro length nine-foot cord (which does not retract), it is light enough to pack, which makes it practical, stylish, AND travel friendly.
Dyson Supersonic Settings and Magnetic Attachments
Featuring three airflow speeds and four temperature settings with a cool shot button, the Supersonic meets all the standard needs of its users. The attachments snap on the front of the dryer magnetically (YASSSS!) and include a smoothing nozzle, a styling concentrator, and a diffuser. Did you get the magnetic part? So simple, so practical.

Be sure to read the manual to learn how to clean the filter, which you find at the bottom of the handle. It’s super easy, so take the time…you don’t want lint to build up! For anyone prone to accidents, Dyson includes a non-slip mat to keep your unit secure on any counter! (I actually use this for obvious reasons.)

My Dyson Supersonic Results on Short Hair
I notice a huge difference in my mane after using the Dyson Supersonic. My hair is short, but since I wash and style it every day, owning a reliable hair dryer is non-negotiable. With the Dyson, drying time is cut by at least a third and with absolutely zero frizz (I use the smoothing nozzle). I haven’t yet tried the highest setting but find that high speed at a medium temp, with a cold blast at the end, works best on my hair. In addition to its flawless design and ergonomics, the Supersonic performs so well it’s worth every penny of the rather hefty price tag. I’m thrilled with the results. For the rest of my routine, see my Olaplex No.6 review, my favorite conditioners for dry, damaged hair, and Christophe Robin shampoo for men.
Dyson Supersonic vs. a Regular Hair Dryer
What sets the Dyson hair dryer apart from the one under your bathroom sink comes down to five things:
- Balance: the motor sits in the handle, not the head, so it feels lighter and easier to control.
- Airflow: Air Multiplier technology delivers a high pressure, focused jet of air that dries faster.
- Heat control: intelligent heat control monitors the air temperature to help prevent extreme heat damage.
- Noise: it is noticeably quieter than most dryers.
- Attachments: they snap on magnetically, so switching from the smoothing nozzle to the diffuser takes a second.
In my experience, drying time drops by at least a third, with zero frizz.
Is the Dyson Supersonic Worth It?
Here’s the thing. Spending this much on a hair dryer may feel like a stretch, but the performance and quality of this tool are superb. This is one Dyson beauty tool that lives up to the hype.
Available at Dyson.com, Sephora.com, and Bluemercury.com. In the UK, shop at Sephora.co.uk or Boots.com.
Dyson has offered it in a range of color combinations over the years, from white and silver to iron and fuchsia. Because on trend.
Dyson Supersonic FAQ
Is the Dyson Supersonic worth it?
If you dry your hair every day, yes. It cuts my drying time by at least a third with zero frizz, and the design, balance, and build quality justify the price.
Is the Dyson Supersonic good for men with short hair?
Yes. As a guy with short hair who washes and styles it daily, it is the best hair dryer I have used. The smoothing nozzle on high speed and medium heat, finished with the cool shot, gives me a frizz-free result in a few minutes.
How do you clean the Dyson Supersonic filter?
The filter sits at the bottom of the handle. Remove the filter cage, clear away lint with a soft brush, and click it back in. Do it regularly so the airflow stays strong.
How long does the Dyson Supersonic last?
Mine has been in daily use for almost a decade, and the technology and performance still hold up. Clean the filter regularly and it will reward you for years.
Does the Dyson Supersonic damage your hair?
It is designed not to. Dyson’s intelligent heat control measures the air temperature more than 40 times a second to help prevent extreme heat damage.
