Writing my two most recent posts reminded me of one of my most random beauty purchases. Ever. Nicole Richie did a Twitter chat with Birchbox a while back and when asked for her #1 travel must-have, she answered with Lucas’ Papaw Ointment. Never heard of it. Clearly, I needed it. I am that insane. #StarsTheyreJustLikeUs
A quick search brought up zero shopping results so on eBay Bart went. As with anything you purchase from abroad, it arrived a month after forgetting you even bought it. So, when the small package from Australia arrived… #Surprise!
Impulse shopping is a skill not a character flaw. Most of my shopping falls into the impulse category. When a tube of Lucas’ Papaw Ointment arrived in the mail, I had to google it to remind myself whether I bought it and then why I had done so. A great nipple cream? Not what I remember needing. Nappy rash? Not that either. Nicole Richie has two kids. I should have known. #FAIL
The red tube is much larger than you think it will be. Queensland grown papaya is hand picked before a branded fermentation process brings it to perfect levels. The pharmaceutical grade petroleum jelly and wax make for a smooth and not overly greasy base. Gum Balsam Peru, an herb, adds natural scent to the ointment, which is free of talc, SLS, shellac and other weird stuff. #Quality
Lucas’ Papaw Ointment has achieved staple status in my book. With its antibacterial and antimicrobial (antimicrobial=antibiotic, FYI) properties, it moisturizes dry lips, heals minor scrapes and cuts, and works wonders on insect bites and a sunburn. I discover a different use almost every day. If your nipples are cracked, apply generously!
Dr. Lucas developed his namesake ointment over 100 years ago in Brisbane, Australia. This multi use product is derived from the papaw plant and its fruit, which the inventor dubbed “the world’s greatest healing agent.” Similar in look to a papaya, the papaw is slightly larger with yellow rather than orange flesh. #WhoKnew
Lucky for us, net-a-porter offers packaging options for Lucas’ Papaw Ointment: a set of 3 tubes with lip applicator (15g each), a larger size jar (75g), and the 25g tube (that is in my stash). Happy shopping!
Thank NPR for showering the papaw fruit with such attention in the U.S. Click here to take a listen.
