With spa-xlusive treatments evolving constantly, many salon procedures are quickly becoming safe for at-home use. So,when the people at PMD sent me their Personal Microderm Tool Kit, I could not wait to play! It was about a decade ago that I experienced my first professional microdermabrasion, which is hands down still one of my most memorable spa-xperiences. With the PMD unit, I am now recreating similarly glowing results without having to leave the house. I’m loving being left to my own devices!

The concept of microdermabrasion is simple. The objective of this anti-aging exercise is to speed up cell renewal by powerfully exfoliating the skin. This mechanical process is achieved with a crystal or diamond tip wand that sands the skin and unclogs any pores. Hyperpigmentation and scars fade to unveil a softer, smoother complexion. Because each treatment removes the outermost layer of the skin, all skin care products penetrate more deeply and deliver more intensive results.

Don’t panic when you receive your unit. Appearances can be deceiving. It’s much easier to use than it looks. Similar to a professional microdermabrasion machine, PMD Personal Microderm implements suction and Aluminum Oxide Crystals as the disc tips on the wand shaped device. Simply use your free hand to hold a small patch of skin tightly and glide the spinning crystal tip over the surface. Do not go over the same area more than twice. Start out with the white training disc and graduate to blue, green, and eventually to red.

Here are a few recommendations that will help you maximize the benefits of a PMD Personal Microderm… Be consistent and build your tolerance up gradually to a coarser tip to achieve visible results. Always use SPF during the day in between treatments. Skip any chemical exfoliants (Retinol, Glycolic Acid, etc) 48 hours in advance of using your PMD. While there is no recovery time, your skin may appear flushed and pink for 30 minutes or so after using the device. Not to worry, it’s just collagen being brought up to the surface of the skin!

I am often challenged with anything that involves a cord, but I found the PMD tool to be very user friendly. Quiet and compact, it’s a great addition to my new and more ambitious monthly face maintenance regimen. Check out Nordstrom.com, Ulta.com, Skinstore.com, and NeimanMarucs.com for various PMD kits, which range from $159 to $179.
