New From DHC: Olive Virgin Oil Crystal Skin Essence & Essential Cream

Every brand has its hero product. The Japanese skincare line DHC has two. Most of us associate the line with the golden bottles of their silky Deep Cleansing Oil. Others cannot live without the single ingredient treatment that is Olive Virgin Oil. If you’re a DHC groupie like yours truly, you may have found the perfect combination of the two in the indulgent Olive Concentrated Cleansing Oil, which tops the list of my personal favorites. So imagine my excitement when DHC expanded the nourishing Olive Virgin Oil range and launched Crystal Skin Essence and Essential Cream.

How about them olives?

What is it about the epicurean staple of mediterranean cuisine that makes for such a beneficial skincare ingredient? Olive fruit oil is extremely rich in antioxidants which help protect the skin against environmental aggressors. In short, topical application can help minimize the signs of premature aging such as hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity. DHC uses hand-picked, 100% organic olives grown in Spain (slightly O/T but if you’ve been to Spain, you will agree that nothing compares to their olives), which are then purified in Japan. The final product results in a nutritious oil ready to fend off oxidative damage.

Crystal Essence

Since my skin is ‘too combination’ to handle a face oil during the day and I prefer to apply facial oils on damp skin (which explains my massive stash of mists), I am beyond thrilled with this new formula. Combining both water and oil components, the DHC Crystal Essence is a weightless solution that delivers the nourishing benefits of an oil in the form of a quick-absorbing serum. The micro droplets of extra virgin olive oil are suspended in a water solution infused with skin smoothing Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Vitamin E.

Why do I love it?

It’s a perfect solution for skincare minimalists who refuse to cut corners. An application of 2-3 pumps provides an ample dose of hydration and moisture in a single step. What do I appreciate most? There’s no trace left behind. Zero shine whatsoever. $36 (50ml)

Essential Cream

Now, if your preference is for a creamy and whipped-to-fluffy-perfection moisturizer, grab yourself a jar of the Essential Cream. Rich without feeling heavy, this comforting cream is packed with the signature organic Olive Oil, a hefty side of Squalane and Rice Bran Oil, and a touch of skin-repairing Beeswax. There is no doubt those whose complexions lean dry will benefit most from this latest launch. Everyone else, myself included, can enjoy it as an overnight moisturizer.

Will I use it?

Yes, but I am keeping it on hand for the fast approaching winter weather. I am currently testing the new acid night treatment from The Inkey List, and I have been layering this new DHC gem on top with great success. It sounds rich but it sinks in without leaving an oil slick behind. Yay for my silk pillowcase remaining stain free! $39 (50ml)
