InStyle – April’s Flying Colors

Thou shalt not underestimate the importance of color. In a world of patented hues like Tiffany blue and Hermès orange, I advise that we take advantage of every shade possible when expressing ourselves. Afterall, flair is not so much about staying on-trend as it is about feeling great!

À propos, April’s InStyle is out today and it’s their annual color issue! The beauty story is green, there’s a denim guide for every day of the month, and a color spread that reflects every hue imaginable and the mood it brings out in us. The cover looks like one of my favorite bags.

For quite some time, I’ve been following Pelayo Diaz on Twitter and have always enjoyed his blog at katelovesme.net. When he began his collaboration with Davidelfin on a line of bags for SS2012 and I saw THIS I thought I was hallucinating.

I emailed the Davidelfin office in Spain immediately and got myself the Clement bag from the Khatarsis Collection. The crazy FedEx bill for customs didn’t bother me in the least and the bag was everything I imagined. Two years later, it’s still my favorite accessory and I can make it work with most of what I wear during the spring and summer months. It’s actually become my trademark.

Piñata - THE LEWK.
THE LEWK.
I should have auditioned for an extra in Katy Perry’s California Gurls video.

While celebrities compete for attention with their latest swag in shades, I stick with the same $10 plastic striped blue frames I’ve worn for the past three years. There literally hasn’t been a day without someone asking me who makes them and where I got them. I love my kelly green Kidrobot hoodie but my friend Corinne who has an impeccable sense of style cannot look at me when I’m wearing it. I’m keeping the sweatshirt, Cor.

My best friend told me once that she liked how I mix colors that don’t usually go together. I remember picking her up at JFK wearing a crazy mix of hot pink, yellow and brown. That was 2004. I’m not saying I’m the mastermind behind the color blocking trend but I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought toning down didn’t apply to me. I’m all about color. I want to look tan, be green, and drink rosé. Sometimes, I tell white lies.

April’s InStyle is a must-read as it features two of the great new makeup collabs coming up–Proenza Schouler for MAC Cosmetics and Santigold for Smashbox. I learned about J.Lo’s tricks to age backwards and discovered a few of Salma Hayek’s beauty secrets. Kate Mara’s spread is flawless. Call me crazy, but I live for the ENTERTAINING section and can’t wait to make Wolfgang Puck’s asparagus soup. Afterall, it’s the perfect shade of green!

My favorite bag from Pelayo Diaz x Davidelfin sold out long ago but I just noticed a couple of clutches from the Khatarsis line available in their outlet. Check them out HERE.
