When Liking Strikes Twice–Clarins Double Serum

I had to think about how to start this one for a while but then it came to me: there really is only one product that has been aging as well as me. Unlike brands that perpetually introduce and then discontinue your favorite item, Clarins steadily improved the original formula of one of their best sellers. The core serum has evolved five times since its launch in 1985. Suffice it to say, one of us has grown up.

My Clarins Double Serum Adventures

In 2002, I used a Clarins product that at time was called Total Double Serum. I loved everything about it, and it became my core night-time treatment for years. I wasn’t thrilled with their first update, and I liked but didn’t love Double Serum Generation 6, which debuted in 2007. I actually only gave it a 6. Out of 10.

Fast forward to 2012, the year of the unexpected. Gangnam Style went viral, TomKat went down, and Clarins launched the latest version of their Double Serum – the Complete Age Control Concentrate. Only the Clarins launch has weathered the test of time and is still relevant two years later.

What’s new about this latest?

The latest double serum has retained its signature dual chamber delivery system, is loaded with 20 pure plant extracts, and leaves your skin evenly toned with visibly reduced pores within weeks of applying it. I rarely object to fragrance in skin care products. Happily, my skin experiences zero sensitivity and I like pretty scents. Double Serum emits a faint botanical spa scent that Clarins should bottle and send my way.

How I use Double Serum

I only use my Double Serum at night and under a moisturizer. Suitable for any skin type, it gives my textbook case of combination skin just the balance it needs. What I like most about the latest iteration of the product is how quickly it absorbs and how much lighter it feels than previous releases. I am known to have too many products in rotation at any given time, but I always remain faithful to my Double Serum for at least a few weeks during the change of seasons. Fingers crossed the next version will address Seasonal Affective Disorder.

While I’m usually oblivious to industry awards, Double Serum’s collection rivals that of any multi-platinum artist (its 57 awards beat anyone!). And, as Ellen exposed this month, Oscar winners favor Clarins as well. Hi, Lupita. #LupitasLipBalm

Being a huge Clarins fan, it’s the only brand whose shelves I rush to at Duty Free. No other brand consistently makes me pull the trigger. But what’s one to do when confronted with Beauty Flash Balm in a 2-pack?! Double Serum is now available in a luxury size, which actually is the only way to go. You’ll thank me when I don’t recognize you.

Clarins Double Serum retails for $85 (1 oz.) and $115 (1.6 oz.) at ulta.com.
