First Impressions: Boscia Cactus Water Moisturizer

Boscia launched their Cactus Water Moisturizer recently and I want to be oblivious about it. Why, you may ask? Simple. Because every boscia product I have loved the last few years has been low key discontinued before I could hoard whatever stock was left. Yes, I’m dreaming of you Cool Blue Essence, Tsubaki Exfoliating Powder, Green Tea Mattifying Hydrogel Masks… I’m keeping my fingers crossed that any excitement over this newness won’t jinx it and cause yet another casualty. On the brighter yet less shiny side, the boscia blotting papers just keep getting better. Praise be.

Another gel?

I know. Gels are the Marthas of skincare as of late, so here is a piece of unsolicited advice: if you’re going to be a gel, be a cactus gel. Boscia nailed it with this latest release giving us weightless texture, a lucious slip, and hours of hydration, all while skipping the questionable add-ons like synthetic fragrance, coloring agents, sulfates and parabens. By the way, is everyone on board with me referring to water moisturizer as a gel?

Cactus tho

As a succulent, Cactus retains moisture in order to thrive in some of the driest, harshest, and most depriving conditions on the planet. Queen of the Night Cactus Extract, used in the boscia new gel formula, ensures that your skin goes from drab to plump in a single application. If your skin tends to get dehydrated, looks parched, feels tight or is in need of a soothing emergency — this will help.

Anything else?

So glad you asked. This water based moisturizer is completely oil-free, which makes it a great addition to your summer skincare arsenal. (Feel free to explore my other post on gel moisturizers that have impressed me). Infused with countless botanicals such as Resurrection Plant, Aloe Vera, Neem Leaf, Holy Basil, Jojoba Seed, and Turmeric Root Extracts among others, the bouncy gel has quite the multi-tasking potential. P.S. I’m totally into the new ‘Clean at Sephora’ badge.

How do I use it?

Granted, it’s only been a few days (hence the first impression angle) but we’re traveling. Skin-stressing conditions always make testing a new formula a fun challenge.

Here’s a brief summary of how I’ve experienced this boscia gem this week:

  • As a follow up to a detoxifying, pore-refining, deep cleansing mask.
  • I’ve kept it in a fridge (mini bar this trip) and it has been a great refreshing mask first thing in the morning, especially since I’ve been looking a little puffier than usual.
  • The bit of Dimethicone has made it a great base for my tinted sunscreen during the day. Don’t be afraid; the slip is super subtle and is nowhere near a traditional spackle like makeup primer.
  • Very important: gels can be tricky if applied with a heavy hand. Less is more. Take a minute to let it fully absorb before layering anything else on to avoid pilling.

It has performed beautifully in the Napa, CA heat. Stay tuned for an update on its performance in the NY and CT humidity next week!
